What are the most-collected Power Words on Newsela?

Educators often have to bridge the gap between core curriculum and the world outside classroom doors. Newsela’s editorial team seeks to support this not only through fresh content added daily, but also through Power Words: a more authentic way for students to learn vocabulary while reading. Power Words articles contain 3 to 5 high-frequency words with student-friendly definitions in context, consistent with their own reading level, so learners can discover and collect vocabulary words while reading about the topics that interest them most. So after a billion articles read on site, we were curious: what are the most-collected Power Words on Newsela? We sliced the data by elementary, middle, and high school usage to find out:

These Power Words span from the general (“likely”, “usually”) at lower grade levels, to more specialized (“financial”, “diversity”) in the high school group. In total, the top 500 Power Words have been collected by students nearly 12 million times. That’s a lot of vocabulary learned in authentic context.
